Email received but not sending

If you are able to receive your email but are unable to send it is possible that you are leaving your messages on the server and therefore maxing out your email storage space. Once the maximum lever is reached you will be unable to send email. While this may seem like an annoyance it is better for you to notice this before people sending email to you are presented with your email returned as mailbox is full. So how do we check this…

Missing a custom Log in module? I know where it is.

Do you have a custom login module or maybe a 3rd party module like the DataSprings Dynamic Login Module that has recently stopped working or actually stopped showing up at all? Have you gotten this error when logging out of your site.

“A critical error has occurred.
You have been redirected to this default Login Page because the Login Page set for this website does not contain a valid DotNetNuke Account Login module, or the permissions have not been set correctly.”

How to change your password on your website.

If you desire to change the password that you use to log onto your website perform the following steps.

Once logged onto the website you can locate your user name next to the logout option. It will be a Hyperlink to your personal settings.

That will take you to the “Manage Profile” page. Once there you will want to select or click the link for “Manage Password”.

That will take you to the page that you can enter your new password. You will need to enter your current Password and then the new password as well as confirm the new password by entering it again. Finally click the Link that says “Change Password”.

That's all there is to it.

How to access your new website email account via webmail.

Go to http://webmail.yourdomain.com
Type in the same username and password that you have for your MS Outlook. You need to enter the entire email name as in name@YourDomain.com.
Click on the ‘Log in’ button.
Once in you can select the Options tab and modify your account

It is necessary to change your password for security reasons the first time you go here.

Go To yourdomain.com:8443 (you may get a warning that there is a problem with the website’s security certificate if so you can select Continue to this website)
Type in your full Email address (including @YourDomain.com) and password and click Login
Select the preference icon
There you will see where you can enter a new password, go ahead and change the password and click ok
Logout
Now you will need to change or setup your outlook settings to use the same password.

NOTE: You will need to replace the "YourDomain" with your actual domain

Module verses a Class

A Visual Basic 6 Module was a popular tool to create a library (if you will) of global routines and variables that you would want to access from multiple places in your code. It allow programmers to be able to maintain and access routines in one place. Basically it can be viewed as a global class available to all other forms and classes. No instantiation needed, it is already instantiated and global. Very convenient to use.

VB6 was primarily a single-user desktop windows applications development tool. Yes, with the proper level of skill and patience you could use it more advanced purposes. In a single user environment, a shared global module is not a problem. Use of a module in a single user VB.Net application is still not a problem for the same reason. But in asp there is a problem. If you consider what might happen if you use a module in an ASP.Net application being used by multiple users you might note that a variable declared at the module level is now a global variable that can is accessed by every instance that touches it without clearing the prior setting. For instance 'UserName' if not reset will be the prior user name set when the function was called. This was not really a problem in VB6 window applications but could be in VB.net. And potentially a tremendous security issues as incoming users take on whatever security permissions were enabled by the last client that set the 'UserName' variable.

So the use of a class while a little more code is required is a better way for ASP code to have a standard “library” of routines that you want to call from many locations in your code. A class will contain your methods (routines) properties (variables) and events. VB6 Had the class file also and was and is used extensively in desktop applications. But as pointed out above in ASP code there is a definite need to secure access to variables for each instance. Classes allow instantiating an individual instance for each use and that keeps each instance unaware of the others.

I must admit this is one of those things that I learned a while ago but forgot. While researching something on a recent project a ran into this article that gives great details on how you can copy the message from a windows based message box. You know the ones you can't highlight and copy? This is even better you don't even need to highlight the text simply type Control+C and then paste it to your Support email.
